Shuckers Re-Sign Derek Savage

One of Shuckers Top Performers from Last Season Returns from Knee Injury

Severn, MD (February 1, 2013) – The Bay Area Shuckers announced the signing of Derek Savage, a fourth year pro who starred for the Shuckers in 2011-2012 before suffering a season ending injury. Savage was also an All-Delaware State performer in high school and All-Conference in college.

“Derek was one of our top performers last season and we’re very happy to see him back on the court after his injury last season,” commented Bay Area Shuckers General Manager John Wolfe.

In 2011-2012, Savage averaged 13.44 points per game, ranked second in rebounds with 7.33 per contest, and finished third in assists with 3.78 per game for Bay Area. In nine games he scored in double digits seven times and had two double-doubles. He had a season high 21 points in a game, twice, and also had season high 12 rebounds twice.

Savage made hi s pro debut with the Manchester (New Hampshire) Millrats of the Premier Basketball League in 2009-2010 averaging 6.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and two steals per game. In 2010 he took his game overseas playing for Al Fara of the Palestinian PBBA Division 1. He averaged 38.4 points per game for the club topping 50 points in a game twice.

He first gained note at Delaware’s Cape Henlopen High School, where Savage was a two-year letterman in both basketball and track and field. For the Vikings track team he competed in the 100m, 20m, 4x100m, 4x200m, long jump, high jump and triple jump. He was named All-State in both sports.

Following high school he headed up Route 1 to Wilmington Delaware’s Goldey-Beacom College. In his freshman season in 2004-2005 he made an immediate impact starting in 19 of the Lightning’s 27 games. He finished his first season with 7.7 points per game (PPG) and 4.9 rebounds per game (RPG). In 2005-2006 he stepped up his game further scoring 10.2 point each game, grabbing 6.1 rebounds per contest and blocking 17 shots with 49 steals. For his junior season he finished the year as a second team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) selection with 14.9 PPG, 7.4 RPG, and 22 blocks and 56 steals on the season.

In 2007-2008 as a senior for the Lightning he continued to improve in every category tossing in 15.5 points a game while hauling in 8.9 boards per game and totaled 39 blocks and 62 steals. For his efforts the Lincoln, Delaware native was named 1st Team All-CACC and was selected for the conference’s All-Tournament Team.

The Bay Area Shuckers are members of the American Professional Basketball League (APBL) a 16-team professional league with teams stretching from Virginia in the south to the Hudson Valley of New York, and includes team in such major markets as Baltimore, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and New York, New York.

The Shuckers (6-3) square-off against the Metropolitan All-Stars (10-1) on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 7:00 PM.
