Second Season Roster Includes Mix of Returnees, Veterans, and Rookies
Severn, MD (October 15, 2012) – After a successful inaugural season, which saw the Bay Area Shuckers advance to the second round of the playoffs, have four players gain overseas professional contracts, and several post-season awards for the team, the Shuckers needed to revamp their roster for the 2012-2013 American Professional Basketball League (APBL) season; and revamp they did.
The new edition Shuckers feature six players who saw time with the team last season, six rookies, and a host of other new players that have a long list of All-American, Most Valuable Player, and All-Conference awards on their resume.
The top returner from last season is Terry Hosley (Parkville/Maryland Bible) who led the team in points scored, steals, and 3-point shots, while averaging 26.62 points a game and gained All-League honors. Also returning are Lamarr Shorts (Bryan College), who averaged 18.66 points the final three games of the season, including 31 in the Shuckers regular season finale, team captain and starting point guard Mike McKenzie (Meade/Delaware State), and Gerald Stansbury (Broadneck/Marymount), Patrick Lipinski (Annapolis Area Christian School/Trinity), and Kevin Green (Patterson/Maryland Bible) who was the team’s top rebounder during a three-game stint last season.
The Shuckers also signed a host of veteran talent, including Fahreed Cheatham (Cheyney), a six-year veteran and two-time league MVP, who earned First Team All-League honors last season and was a runner-up in MVP voting last season; Gus Chase (St. Frances), who will be entering his fifth year as a pro after earning All-American honors at Sheridan College and Georgetown College of Kentucky. Chase has also earned All-League awards three times in the pro ranks. Dennard Abraham (Towson) also will be playing his fifth pro season. The 6’9, 245 pound center, who led the Towson Tigers in rebounding his senior season has played professionally in Holland, Brazil, and Washington State. Fellow Towson Tiger Rocky Coleman (Walbrook) will also look for continued success and looked impressive in the Shuckers 155-88 exhibition win over the Metropolitan All-Stars this past Saturday.
Amongst the rookies are Perry Wright (Cardinal Gibbons) who earned All-American honors at Widener, Mount St. Mary’s Danny Thompson who led The Mount in rebounding and blocks in 2011-2012 and did the same for the Shuckers in their exhibition win, and Cody White (Wesley) who was an All-Conference and All-Delaware selection as a prep player before leading the Wolverines in rebounding in the collegiate ranks.
Rookie signings also include several former Baltimore area prep stars. Anthony Thomas, a top rebounder at North County High School before playing at Howard University and American International, Joe Addis who starred at Dundalk and CCBC-Essex, and Tyrone Burns, who lit up the score board for Lake Clifton High School, CCBC-Essex, and Maryland Bible.
The Bay Area Shuckers are members of the American Professional Basketball League (APBL) and tip-off their season on November 3, 2012 at the North Jersey Pros before travelling to Martinsburg, West Virginia on November 11th to take on the West Virginia Monarchs. The Shuckers home opener is slated for Saturday, November 17th at 7:00 PM at the Kilby Center located on the campus of Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS) in Severn, Maryland just minutes from I-97, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and Route 100.
