Named Conference Player of the Year, All-American with Widener in 2011-2012
Severn, MD (August 30, 2012) – When the Bay Area Shuckers tip-off the 2012-2013 season in Severn, Maryland, local fans can see one of their neighbors suit-up. Today the Shuckers announced the signing of Severn resident Perry Wright, the former Cardinals Gibbons High School star and All-American at Widener University.
“We continue to be proud to showcase local talent and in Perry’s case, we have someone who went from playing on the courts of Severn to becoming an All-American in college. Now we’re excited to see his continued growth with the Shuckers back home in Severn,“ commented Bay Area Shuckers General Manager John Wolfe.
After a stellar career at Baltimore’s Cardinal Gibbons High School, Wright headed north to Widener University of Chester, Pennsylvania. Playing in 21 games as a freshman the 6’3” guard averaged three points per game and had memorable performances including 13 points and three steals in the conference semifinals against Messiah on February 25, 2009 and also had 5-for-5 shooting in a 10 point performance against Penn State Brandywine.
His sophomore season included appearances in 22 games and Wright’s averages climbed to 8.68 points, 2.77 rebounds, and one assist a game. He finished the season ranked 13th in the Commonwealth Conference in field goal percentage (.472) and ranked second on the team in points per game. A highlight of the 2009-2010 season was a then career high 17 points against Lycoming on 4-for-4 shooting from the three point range.
In 2010-2011 Wright saw his experience continue to grow as he played in 25 games and earned three starts. He finished the season ranked second for the Pride and 17th in the conference with 10.4 points per game. The Severn native scored in double figures 13 times, including ten times from the bench and had a career high 25 against Alvernia.
Wright saw his game explode as a senior for Widener in 2011-2012. His numbers moved up in every major category as he ranked third in the league with 16.2 points per game, eighth with 6.7 rebounds per contest, 14th with 2.1 assists per game, sixth with a .739 free throw percentage, fourth with 2.3 steals per contest and eighth with a .368 three-point percentage. This resulted in Wright being named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year and his selection as Third Team All-American, First Team NABC All-Mid-Atlantic District and Second Team D3Hoops.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region.
Wright will be with the Shuckers when they open training camp on September 6th.
