Bay Area Shuckers Set to Host The Bank of Glen Burnie ACPBL All-Star Game on April 1st

Severn, MD (March 14, 2012) – On January 14, 1969, the Baltimore area last hosted a professional basketball all-star game as the then Baltimore Civic Center welcomed the NBA All-Star Game. Now 43 years later an all-star game returns to the bay area as the Bay Area Shuckers prepare to host The Bank of Glen Burnie ACPBL All-Star Game on Sunday, April 1st at Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn, Maryland, just minutes south of Baltimore.

With teams in major metropolitan areas including Baltimore, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, and Hartford the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League (ACPBL) showcases some of the nation’s top pro basketball talent.

Back in 1969 the NBA All-Star Game had a distinct Baltimore flair as Baltimore Bullets Head Coach Gene Shue coached the East Squad and three Bullets represented Charm City. Earl Monroe, in his first All-Star Game, Wes Unseld, the 1969 Rookie of the Year and MVP, and All-Star veteran Gus Johnson. All three performed well as Monroe scored 21 points, Unseld added 11 points and eight rebounds, and Johnson posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Oscar Robertson of the Cincinnati Royals garnered MVP honors with 24 points, six rebounds and five assists to win his third All-Star Game MVP award and lead the East to a 123-112 victory. Elgin Baylor of the Lakers led the West with 21 points. Future Bullets star Elvin Hayes, then a rookie with the San Diego Rockets, also suited up for the West squad and finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds.

The Baltimore area’s latest version of the All-Star Game will also include two from the local team as Adrian Bowie (Maryland) and Terry Hosley (Parkville/Maryland Bible) have been selected to represent the Shuckers and the South Squad.

The South Squad will be coached by Dallas Comegys, a collegiate star at Depaul University before being selected in the first round of the 1987 NBA Draft by the NBA Hawks. Comegys went on to play two seasons in the NBA before playing overseas for over a decade.

A day full of basketball fun will start with gate opening at 1:30 PM. At 1:40 the Three Point Shot and Slam Dunk Competitions will take place pitting the ACPBL best long range shooters and dunk masters against each other. The All-Star Game will tip-off at 3:10 PM.

The Slam Dunk and 3-Point Competitions will be announced by WBALTV Sports Anchor and Reporter Pete Gilbert and WNAV Radio’s Wiley Baker will announce the All-Star Game to fans at Spalding.

The afternoon will also be filled with vendors, contests, giveaways, and performances by the Bay Area Shuckers Dance Team.
